The Great Love That Brought Us to Life When We Were Dead in Our Sins

4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
7in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
9not by works, so that no one can boast.
10For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:4–10 (NIV)
Commentary

Young professionals today live under the constant pressure to prove themselves through performance and achievements. We often try to validate our worth by how hard we work or the results we produce. This work-centered attitude keeps us in a state of perpetual anxiety, and eventually, we fall into frustration and helplessness when faced with our own shortcomings.

The Apostle Paul proclaims that because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our transgressions (vv. 4–5). Our salvation does not come from the righteous things we have done, but is a gift from God through faith (vv. 8–9). We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works (v. 10).

Today, rest in the assurance that your salvation does not depend on your performance. Remember and give thanks for the immense love and grace that brought you to life when you were spiritually dead. While we were saved by grace so that no one can boast, we are now called to be people who strive to do good works out of gratitude for that grace. Reclaim your spiritual identity as God’s masterpiece and live a life that reflects the incomparable riches of His mercy and grace.

Difficult Words
- Dead in Our Transgressions: Refers to the fundamental human condition where our relationship with God was severed due to sin and disobedience, leaving us in a state of spiritual helplessness and death.
- Saved by Grace: Emphasizes that our salvation is a gift obtained solely through the mercy of God, who is rich in compassion, rather than through our own actions or efforts. (This focuses on the sovereignty of grace rather than the dismissal of good deeds.)
My Meditation Record
1 What is the basis for God bringing us to life while we were dead in our sins (v. 4), and why does Paul emphasize that our salvation is not by works? (Refer to vv. 8–9)
2 Are you currently living like someone who is spiritually dead, trapped in a sense of helplessness because of your faults or mistakes? Despite being saved by grace, are you still trying to prove your worth through your own efforts?
3 In response to the truth that "we are God’s handiwork," declare today that you were created in Christ Jesus for good works. Perform one act of kindness today as an expression of gratitude for God's grace.
