Disciples of Christ Who Practice Loving One Another
Young adults often live under the pressure to prove themselves. We try to demonstrate that we are disciples through how competent or successful we are. However, this focus on external achievements forces us into constant competition and comparison, causing us to lose the true mark of a disciple and experience a loss of spiritual direction.
Jesus gave His disciples a new command: "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another" (v. 34). He then declared that this love would be the sole sign by which everyone would know they are His disciples (v. 35). Loving one another is not an optional choice; it is the essential identity and mission of a follower of Christ.
Today, examine what the "sign" of your life is. We must love one another based on the model of God’s love—"as I have loved you." Remember that love, not your competence or success, is the mark of a disciple. Through the overflow of this love, the world will see a true Christian. Reclaim your spiritual identity through the practice of love and live a life that reveals God's glory.
