Remain in My Love

9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
10If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
13Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
14You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 15:9–14 (NIV)
Commentary

In the midst of an endless cycle of seeking validation and battling inner emptiness, it is easy for us to lose sight of true joy. We often struggle to earn love through our own efforts and achievements, but that kind of satisfaction fades quickly. Without understanding the true essence of "remaining in love," we often experience a sense of lost direction, feeling isolated even in a crowd.

Jesus declares, "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you," and invites us to "remain in my love" (v. 9). This "remaining" becomes a reality through our obedience to His commands (v. 10), and the result is that His joy dwells within us, making our own joy complete (v. 11). Obedience to His commands is not a forced submission; it is a response of love—a way to enjoy the privilege of being a friend to Jesus, the ultimate Friend who laid down His life for us (vv. 13-14).

Today, remember that your obedience is an expression of love. Jesus’ command to "remain in my love" is His warmest invitation to provide you with true rest and a life of fullness. When you act according to what your Friend, the Lord, commands—by loving one another—you will experience a spiritual abundance that the world simply cannot provide. Seek the spiritual maturity that comes from rooting yourself deeply in His love through obedience.

Difficult Words
- Remain in My Love: Just as Jesus remained in the Father’s love, this is a command for believers to continually experience and dwell in His love through a life of obedience to His word.
- That Your Joy May Be Complete: Living in love by obeying Jesus’ commands is not a heavy burden; rather, it is a gracious purpose intended to provide us with a level of joy and satisfaction that the world cannot offer.
My Meditation Record
1 While commanding His disciples to "remain in my love," what specific method did Jesus provide for staying in that love? (Refer to v. 10)
2 Are you currently remaining in Jesus' love through obedience, just as He remained in the Father’s love by keeping His commands? Is your spiritual life a loving fellowship full of joy, or does it feel like a mere obligation?
3 Meditating on Jesus’ words—"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends"—identify one small "commandment" (action) you can practice today to express your love and obedience to your Friend, Jesus.
