Standing Before the Holy God

1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.
2Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.
3And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
6Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
7With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:1–8 (NIV)
Commentary

Sometimes we are prone to claiming our own righteousness out of pride, while at other times we feel spiritually paralyzed by guilt and a sense of uncleanness. When we evaluate ourselves by worldly standards without acknowledging our frailty as "people of unclean lips," we lose our true calling and suffer the pain of lost direction.

In the year King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the holy God seated on a high and exalted throne (vv. 1, 3). In the face of this overwhelming holiness, Isaiah repented deeply, crying out, "Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips" (v. 5). However, a seraph purified his lips with a live coal, declaring, "Your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for" (vv. 6–7). Following this purification, Isaiah responded to God’s call: "Here am I. Send me!" (v. 8).

Today, remember that your worship is a place of purification where you meet the holy God. Do not hide your uncleanness or weaknesses; confess them honestly. When you rely on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven and your spiritual vitality is restored. Make a spiritual commitment to respond to the holy God’s call as one sent on a mission.

Difficult Words
- Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord Almighty: This praise from the seraphim emphasizes the exalted and pure essence of God—His absolute holiness that distinguishes Him from all creation. (The triple repetition signifies supreme emphasis.)
- A Live Coal: Taken from the altar, this symbolizes atoning purification that cleanses Isaiah’s sinful and unclean lips. Through this sanctification, Isaiah is finally prepared to undertake God’s mission.
My Meditation Record
1 What was Isaiah’s reaction when he saw the Lord seated on a high throne (v. 5), and what did the seraph proclaim after touching Isaiah’s lips with the live coal? (Refer to v. 7)
2 In the presence of God’s glory—praised as "Holy, Holy, Holy"—are you currently confessing your uncleanness with a heart that cries, "Woe to me"? Are the words coming from your lips holy?
3 Like Isaiah who confessed, "Here am I. Send me!", offer a prayer of commitment today. Give thanks for the grace of forgiveness and dedicate your life to fulfilling God's will as His messenger.
