The Worship of a Broken Spirit That God Desires

15Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.
16You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
18May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar. Psalm 51:15–19 (NIV)
Commentary

We often try to approach God through elaborate and "perfect" rituals. We may attempt to please God by asserting our own righteousness through outward duties or generous offerings. However, when we repeat formal worship while leaving our inner sins and impurities untouched, we end up offering hollow worship that does not please God, leading to spiritual conflict.

David confesses that the sacrifice God desires is a "broken spirit" (v. 17). God will not despise a broken and contrite heart. Before God delights in burnt offerings and "whole" sacrifices, true worship begins with a confession of repentance and gratitude—opening one’s lips to declare His praise (v. 15). Authentic worship always stems from inner purification.

Today, offer your worship with a broken spirit. Lay down the pride that clings to external conditions or perfect forms, and approach God by repenting for your sins and inadequacies. A broken spirit, which God does not despise, is the very "righteous sacrifice" He delights in most. Restore your spiritual vitality through repentance and become a true worshiper who enjoys the joy of praise.

Difficult Words
- A Broken Spirit: A state of heart that is humbled and repentant due to a deep realization of one’s sin. It is the true attitude of repentance that God delights in more than outward rituals.
- Sacrifices of the Righteous: Worship characterized by praise and obedience that flows from a restored relationship with God after the inner self has been purified through the repentance of a broken spirit.
My Meditation Record
1 What kind of sacrifice does David confess that the Lord does not delight in, and how does he define the sacrifice that God actually seeks? (Refer to vv. 16–17)
2 Are you currently approaching God with a broken spirit, or are you hiding your sins and weaknesses behind outward rituals and formal worship? What is the honest confession you need to make that God will not despise?
3 Offering a broken and contrite heart, spend time today honestly confessing your inner sins and frailties to God. End with a prayer of gratitude, asking Him to open your lips to declare His praise.
