Obedience is Better Than Sacrifice: Worship Through Life
22But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”
24Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them.
25Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.”
26But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king of Israel!”
1Samuel 15:22–26 (NIV)
Commentary
In our 30s, we often try to base our righteousness on visible religious activities. We strive to please God through "sacrifices"—impressive service, generous offerings, or external dedication. However, when we harbor a rebellious heart or refuse to bend our stubborn will to His word, our worship can become hollow. A life without obedience leads to spiritual pride and eventually to a sense of frustration.
Samuel proclaimed to King Saul, "To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams" (v. 22). Heeding the Lord's voice is the worship He delights in most. Rebellion is compared to divination, and arrogance to the evil of idolatry (v. 23). A life of disobedience is essentially a loss of spiritual direction, drifting away from God.
Today, offer your entire life as a worship of obedience. Before seeking out grand service or visible sacrifices, first listen to and heed God's Word. Obedience is the most powerful spiritual act that roots your faith deeply. Lay down your stubbornness and restore your spiritual vitality and intimacy with God through a heart of obedience.
Difficult Words
- To Obey is Better Than Sacrifice:A principle emphasizing that an inner posture of listening to God's voice and following His will is far more important than outward religious rituals.
- Rebellion / Arrogance:A heart that chooses to disobey God's word. This is essentially the same as turning away from God to bow before idols.
My Meditation Record
1
What did Samuel declare regarding obedience in comparison to sacrifice (v. 22), and to what sins did he compare rebellion and arrogance? (Refer to v. 23)
2
Are you currently placing your righteousness in outward religious acts while maintaining a stubborn heart that refuses to actually listen to God's Word?
3
Remembering that "to obey is better than sacrifice," pick one command from the Word that you find hardest to follow in your daily life. Practice a small act of obedience today with a heart that heeds God's voice.
