The Sacrifice of Praise That Pleases God

12And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.
13Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore.
14For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.
15Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.
16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:12–16 (NIV)
Commentary

We often try to limit worship to a mandatory act performed at a specific time or place. When we focus only on the things of this earth, failing to seek the "enduring city," we experience a sense of lost direction. If we lead a double life—separating our daily routine from our spiritual worship—we are left with an emptiness that comes from failing to offer the true sacrifice that pleases God.

The author of Hebrews proclaims that "Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood" (v. 12). Therefore, we are called to go to Him "outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore" (v. 13). The sacrifices that truly please God are continually offering a sacrifice of praise through Jesus and not forgetting to do good and share with others (vv. 15–16).

Today, offer your entire life as worship that pleases God. A sacrifice of praise is the fruit of your lips, while doing good and sharing are the fruits of your hands and feet. As pilgrims journeying toward an enduring city, do not be overly attached to the things of this world. Step "outside the camp," bear the disgrace of Jesus, and become a true worshiper who fulfills your spiritual mission through kindness and praise.

Difficult Words
- Suffered Outside the City Gate: This refers to the place where Jesus became the sacrificial offering, bearing our sin and shame. It serves as a call for us to follow Him, even if it means bearing the world's disgrace.
- Sacrifice of Praise: A confession of gratitude offered continually to God through Jesus Christ. It is more than just a song; it is a spiritual commitment—the fruit of lips that testify to His name.
My Meditation Record
1 Why did Jesus Christ suffer outside the city gate (v. 12), and what kind of sacrifice should we continually offer to God? (Refer to v. 15)
2 Are you currently living a life that goes to Jesus "outside the camp," bearing His disgrace, or are you caught in a spiritual double life, obsessed only with worldly things?
3 Remembering the words, "With such sacrifices God is pleased," offer praise with your lips today and perform one small act of kindness or sharing with your hands and feet.
