Discipleship in Obedience: Following Immediately Without Calculation

1One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him listening to the word of God.
2He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.
3He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
5Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
7So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
9For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,
10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
11So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Luke 5:1–11 (NIV)
Commentary

As young professionals, we often face moments of helplessness and frustration when we "work hard all night" but have nothing to show for it. In these times, it is tempting to rely solely on our own experience and expertise, often neglecting the authority of God's Word. When our logic and calculations take precedence over His voice, we end up struggling with spiritual impatience and a loss of direction.

Despite his expert experience as a fisherman who had caught nothing all night, Peter obeyed Jesus’ command to "put out into deep water." He declared, "But because you say so, I will let down the nets" (vv. 4–5). The result was a miracle so great that the nets began to break. Upon witnessing this, the disciples pulled their boats to shore, left everything, and followed Jesus immediately (v. 11).

Today, lay down your calculations and prior experiences to obey Jesus' word immediately. The obedience of faith—letting down the net simply because He says so—will transform your helplessness into miraculous fruit. Through the radical obedience of a disciple who leaves everything to follow Him, you will fulfill your spiritual mission to "fish for people" and root yourself firmly in faith.

Difficult Words
- Because You Say So, I Will Let Down the Nets: This demonstrates total trust—laying down one's own experience and calculations as a fisherman to prioritize the authority of Jesus Christ's word above all else.
- Left Everything and Followed Him: The decisive commitment of a disciple to immediately let go of worldly possessions and means of living to walk with Jesus as the sole purpose of life.
My Meditation Record
1 Why did Peter choose to let down the nets despite his failed efforts the previous night (v. 5), and what was the disciples' attitude of obedience after witnessing the miracle? (Refer to v. 11)
2 Are you currently trusting your own professional expertise more than the Word of God? Do you have the humility of Peter, who confessed, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man"?
3 Meditating on Peter's obedience, find one specific area today where you can set aside your own "expert" logic and immediately obey a prompting from Jesus' Word.
