The Fruit of Faith Perfected by Action

17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
20You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?
21Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.
24You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. James 2:17–24 (NIV)
Commentary

In our 30s, we often settle into the misconception that intellectual agreement or a simple verbal confession is enough for our faith. However, faith without action produces no change in our actual lives, leaving us only with a sense of emptiness. This gap between what we say and what we do can lead to spiritual exhaustion and a loss of direction, as we lack the tangible evidence of a living faith.

The Apostle James warns that "faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead" (v. 17). He explains that faith works together with actions, and faith is "made complete" by what we do (v. 22). Abraham’s act of offering Isaac on the altar was the proof that justified his faith. Without action, faith is useless—even demons believe in God’s existence and shudder, but they do not obey (vv. 19–20).

Today, examine whether your faith is alive or dead. True faith inevitably bears the fruit of action. Taking action is not about building up your own righteousness; it is an expression of love that proves the Word—"it was credited to him as righteousness"—through your life. Seek the spiritual maturity where your faith is made complete through your deeds.

Difficult Words
- Dead Faith: A state of faith that only exists in verbal confession or intellectual agreement without any lifestyle changes or obedience. It refers to a vain state of faith that does not lead to salvation.
- Faith Was Made Complete by What He Did: The process where inner conviction (faith) proves itself to be true and alive through outward obedience (action), reaching spiritual maturity. Action is the perfected fruit of faith.
My Meditation Record
1 How does James define faith that lacks action (vv. 17, 20), and what was the specific example of Abraham’s action that made his faith complete? (Refer to vv. 21–22)
2 Are you currently mistaking mere intellectual agreement—which even demons possess—for true faith? In what area of your life are you currently showing a "dead faith" without any accompanying action?
3 Remembering the words, "faith was made complete by what he did," find one small, practical act of obedience today that can prove and complete your faith.
