Saving Grace That Empowers Good Works

4But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,
5he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
6whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
7so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
8This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. Titus 3:4–8 (NIV)
Commentary

As high-achieving young professionals, we often try to earn our standing—even with God—through our own "righteous acts." When we base our value on what we have done, we inevitably fall into spiritual helplessness under legalistic condemnation. If we view good works only as a heavy duty rather than a joyful response, our lives lose the vibrancy of God's glory and are left feeling empty.

The Apostle Paul declares that God saved us not because of our own righteous things, but because of His kindness and love (vv. 4–5). Salvation is an act of pure grace given through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. The purpose of this grace is to empower those who trust in God to be "careful to devote themselves to doing what is good" (v. 8).

Today, remember that your good deeds are the result of salvation, not the price of it. We are called to live a life devoted to good works out of deep gratitude for His mercy. Through the renewal of the Spirit, embrace your identity as an heir with the hope of eternal life. Let your actions reveal the beauty of the Gospel to those around you.

Difficult Words
- Washing of Rebirth and Renewal by the Holy Spirit: This refers to the internal transformation of salvation, where we are cleansed from sin through God’s mercy. It is the process of receiving new life through the work of the Holy Spirit.
- Careful to Devote Themselves to Doing What is Good: This is not a condition for obtaining salvation, but rather the evidence of it. It describes a life where one carefully and voluntarily lives ethically out of gratitude for the grace and mercy already received.
My Meditation Record
1 On what basis did God save us (v. 5), and what was the purpose of pouring out the Holy Spirit on us through Jesus Christ? (Refer to vv. 6–7)
2 Are you currently under the illusion that you must earn your salvation through righteous deeds? Have you lost the heart of gratitude for God's mercy, viewing "doing good" as a mere obligation?
3 Meditate on the instruction to be "careful to devote yourself to doing what is good." Out of gratitude for His grace, find one small, thoughtful act of kindness to perform today for a colleague or neighbor.
