Today's Scripture

Choosing Life: A Matter of Expression

Slow your breathing and prepare your heart for the Word.

God, shine your Word on my heart and life today.

Words to Know

Review unfamiliar words before reading the passage.

Not Too Difficult or Beyond Your ReachEmphasizes that God's commands are not beyond human capability nor hidden in inaccessible places. It is a declaration of how accessible and "doable" obedience truly is.
In Your Mouth and in Your HeartSignifies that God’s Word is already deeply engraved within us, in a state of intimacy where it can be confessed and practiced at any time.

Read the Word Slowly

11Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.
12It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”
13Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”
14No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.
15See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.
16For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. Deuteronomy 30:11–16 (NIV)

Hold the Word in Your Heart

My Meditation Journal

What are the two reasons Moses gives to emphasize that the command is not "too far away" (vv. 12–13), and how does he describe the closeness of the Word? (Refer to v. 14)

Are you currently avoiding obedience by convincing yourself that God’s commands are too difficult or distant? What Word of God is currently in your mouth and heart, and are you choosing life by obeying it?

In light of the truth that "the word is very near you; it is in your mouth," choose one simple verse to meditate on today and perform one small, immediate act of obedience to put that Word into practice.

We often perceive God’s commands as something difficult and distant. When we feel that His Word is hidden "up in heaven" or "beyond the sea"—like an unbearable burden—we are quick to give up on obedience and fall into spiritual helplessness. Facing the choice between blessing and curse, we experience a loss of direction and a sense of impatience. We are losing sight of the true essence of obedience.

Moses proclaims, "What I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach" (v. 11). He asserts with confidence that "the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it" (v. 14). Loving the Lord your God, walking in His ways, and keeping His decrees is actually the simplest path to choosing life and prosperity (vv. 15–16).

Today, lay down the excuses that label obedience as hard or far away. God’s Word is incredibly close to your mouth and your heart. Obedience is not a matter of sheer willpower; it is an expression of love—choosing life and blessing. When you obey out of a heart that loves God, you will experience spiritual prosperity and the freedom of living under His blessing.
